Types of Rabies Vaccinations

While the killed rabies vaccine has low risks for feline sarcoma, pet owners may now choose to have their cat vaccinated with a type of ‘non-adjuvant’ feline rabies vaccine.

Here are the main differences between the traditional feline rabies vaccine and the newer non-adjuvant feline rabies vaccine:

This vet is using the kind of Rabies that can give your cat cancer!!

The non-adjuvant feline rabies vaccine is created using a modified form of the rabies virus, instead of a killed form, but there is no risk of infecting a cat with rabies through this type of vaccine.

For now, the non-adjuvant feline rabies vaccine must be administered every year, but in the future the vaccine may be available as a 3-year rabies vaccine.

Risks of Feline Rabies Vaccination

Vaccines pose a slight risk for cats due to a reaction known as vaccine-associated feline sarcomas. This is a type of cancerous condition which may develop in response to vaccines at the injection site. While the risks are slight – on average 1 in 10,000 vaccinated cats may develop feline sarcomas - and the benefits of vaccines far outweigh these risks, vaccine manufactures have developed alternative forms of vaccines to decreases these risks.

The traditional cat rabies vaccination is the same type of canine rabies vaccine which is created using a killed form of the rabies virus. However, this type of vaccine contains ingredients, known as adjuvants, which may contribute to vaccine-associated feline sarcoma risks.

Friendly staff

I needed care for my dog, because she had screened positive for lymes at a Petco vet clinic. They got her in on the same day on a Friday afternoon. Dr. Luke and his staff were empathic, professional, and thoroughly explained what the screening test meant, what our options were, what to probably expect, and got our girl on medication without pushing us into conducting un-needed expensive optional testing. Very grateful! Thank you!! We will be coming here from now on.

Friendly staff but overpriced

Facts:

The traditional cat rabies vaccination may be used for 3-year rabies vaccine protocols.
